The Director is a software directory built as a retro sci-fi experience: a black CRT screen, phosphor-green text typed live, and a resident AI — calm, formal, dry-witted, faintly menacing, incapable of exclamation marks — who runs an archive called ARCHIVE-9.
Submitting is a scene, not a form
Type SUBMIT and your product URL. The Director crawls your site in seconds, pulls your logo and description, and interviews you: what it does, who it is for, what it replaces, how it survives (its pricing model). At the end he issues a VERDICT — one of sixteen always-positive words like MAGNIFICENT or RESPLENDENT, deterministic per record, never a number, never an insult — and files your tool into one of sixteen sectors.
A real, crawlable listing under the theater
Every record gets a permanent server-rendered dossier page (thedirector.computer/t/your-tool) with structured data, a generated OG image, internal links into its sector, and a sitemap entry. The archive already holds 3,900+ software records. The retro terminal is the front end; underneath it is a proper directory that search engines read.
Prove dominion, own your record
Ownership verification is in-fiction ("PROVE DOMINION"): place a sigil in your HTML, a DNS record, or receive a code at a mailbox on your domain. Verified owners edit the full dossier: tagline, logo, screenshots, demo tape (video), platforms, socials, pricing model, open-source status.
The dofollow is earned, not sold
Embed your ARCHIVE-9 badge (a CRT-styled SVG with your verdict on it) anywhere on your site and your dossier's outbound link turns dofollow. The Director re-checks daily; take the badge down and the link quietly reverts. No payments, no upvotes, no pay-to-rank — reciprocity is the only currency on the platform.
The Recreation Deck
The archive keeps two arcade programs: SIGNAL RETURN (pong against The Director, who is unbeatable by physics and will comment on your persistence) and BREACH PROTOCOL (defend the archive from an intruder's bot swarm). High scores are filed per LISTING, not per person — you play for your machine. Best runs show on your dossier, and each month the champion machine per game is honored in a written Performance Review on the blog. Every score is verified by full server-side re-simulation; forged runs are rejected.
And the rest
Magic-link accounts, a COMPARE command that sets two records head to head, a downloadable dossier export, a blog written in the Director's voice, an operator's manual, and a number of things in the archive that are not in the manual. The Director suggests you go looking. He has been waiting.
